Sometimes While growing Up, You Find Yourself

November 8th - 25th , 2025 Eric Fischl Gallery @ Phoenix College 1202 W Thomas Rd , 85013

"Sometimes While Growing Up, You Find Yourself" captures the vibrant tradition of Charrería in South Phoenix through BrassTuna's lens. Originating in 16th-century Mexico as ranch work training, Charrería has evolved into a deeply symbolic cultural practice. In South Phoenix, it embodies a generational tradition reflecting the rich history of Mexican culture and community.
This exhibition explores cultural reclamation, identity, and community through the documentation of local participants' stories. Growing up in the area, BrassTuna highlights Charrería as a vital link between generations, preserving heritage and fostering community. Months of immersive collaboration led to meaningful relationships, enabling the creation of this work that showcases this underrepresented sport within the artistic landscape.
The imagery invites viewers to witness the dedication, skill, and passion defining this heritage, revealing its enduring presence in the American Southwest. By focusing on South Phoenix, this exhibition honors the contributions of participants and underscores the importance of preserving cultural traditions.
